While there’s been some debate as to whether 98118 actually is statistically the country’s most diverse ZIP code, it is certainly one of the most diverse parts of Seattle, and that fact is no better on display than on Rainier Valley Culture Fest weekend. Taking place this weekend, August 17-18, the festival kicks off with the Rainier Valley Heritage Parade Saturday at noon, after which Rainier Avenue will be blocked off between South Alaska and South Brandon streets to allow festival-goers to bring the celebration into the streets as part of the Seattle Summer Streets program. Live music, kids activities, games, pie-eating contests, and much more are on the schedule for Saturday, as well.
The festival continues Sunday with the Othello Park International Music and Arts Festival at, you guessed it, Othello Park. The entertainment line up for the day includes kids’ favorite Recess Monkey, a Oaxacan dance group, a performance by Macabee Martial Arts, and much more. Kids will have no shortage of activities to keep them busy, from an array of bouncy houses, to classic games such as the ring toss, bean bag toss, and a fishing pond. And, of course, there will be the requisite food trucks on hand including Sam Choy’s Poke, and Delicious Authorithai. Othello Park is located at 4351 S Othello St.
